Rowing Technique

Improving technique may be the most efficient way to get faster. Here are some guidelines and resources. Visit this section of the site monthly for updates:

  • Set a goal to fix your most promising technical flaw this year and attack it just like any of your training goals.
  • Spend part of every practice working on technique. Focus on just one or two things for several days, or even two or three weeks.
  • Do drills with discipline. Mindlessly doing drills will not improve technique, and it may make it worse.
  • Get videotaped on the water, and erg and lift in front of mirrors.
  • Think about improving technique right to the last strokes of a workout. If your 10 minute cool down is sloppy every day, you might be wasting an hour a week when you could have been improving!
