Dumbbell Squat

The DB squat is an excellent exercise to teach proper squat technique.  It is also an effective exercise by itself or can be used as a warm-up before heavier lifting.

  • Place feet about hip width apart.
  • Hold light DB's (5-10lbs) on top of the thighs.
  • Think about sticking the butt and chest out.
  • Hold this tight position.
  • Raise arms in front of the body as you squat.
  • Maintain tight upper body with body slightly forward.
  • Dumbbells should rise at the same rate that the body descends.
  • Try to get thighs parallel to the floor.
  • You should be able to sit back on the heels.  This will work the quads and take the pressure off the knees.
